It was pretty late at night, but Reyes was up and about, walking down the street. After his whole desert escapade, Reyes had stopped by a small urban area where he had been staying for the past week. There was only a single motel, and Reyes was lucky he had snatched up the last available room, however pricy it may have been. It was clean, however, and the sheets got changed every day and the trash was taken out and nothing of his got stolen yet, so that was fine by him.

But it was pretty late none the less, and Reyes found himself unable to sleep. He was feeling strangely restless, so the only cure he could think of was to go for a walk. Alexander had woken up straight away, which in turn woke up the newest addition to his team: Ransom the Skarmory. The armored bird Pokemon was still wary of his new surroundings and situation, so he often woke up on a dime or clawed the crap out of something supposedly without reason. But Ransom was slowly and steadily getting used to the idea. The rest of Reyes’ team was asleep and stayed in their places, so Reyes decided a nice walk with the oldest member and newest member of his team was appropriate.

The night air was cool, but not cold. Reyes smiled and whistled to himself as he strolled along, followed by a lizard and an oversized bird. There weren’t many people on the street and he was fully expecting to be alone with his motley crew, which was why he almost jumped three feet into the air when a loud crash resounded from a nearby heap of trash cans.

Reyes and his two Pokemon stared, almost in disbelief, as what looked like a neon green ooze came out from one of the knocked over trash can. Literally, it was so bright it nearly glowed in the dark. Even Satoshi was speechless in his head, staring at the… Whatever it was. It seemed to have two eyes as well, which made it a Pokemon… Probably. He wasn’t sure.

“Grimer, the Sludge Pokémon. It was born when sludge in a dirty stream was exposed to X-rays from the moon.” His pokedex piped up. Underneath the picture of the Grimer was a yellow box that said ‘shiny’. A shiny Pokemon? Reyes had encountered only one of those in his life, and it was the most beautiful Roserade he had ever seen. Shiny Pokemon were extremely impressive for contests, though this bright green ball of slime could hardly be considered beautiful. Or even contest worthy. Yet the appeal of a rarely coloured Pokemon was tempting.

“Okay Alexander, sand attack.” Alexander looked thoroughly disgusted, but kicked up some dirt and debris right in the wild Grimer’s face anyway. The wild Pokemon made a deep, guttural sound in displeasure, almost as if it were growling.

The wild Grimer opened her mouth and spewed out a noxious purple cloud that drifted towards them. She was a poison type Pokemon, so Reyes shouldn’t have been surprised when it attacked them with a poison gas. Now was a good time as any to try out his newest addition to the team. “Ransom, blow it away.”

Ransom raised his large metal wings and began to flap, effectively blowing the cloud of purple fumes back in the wild Grimer’s direction, though the bright green blob didn’t seem to notice it whatsoever. Reyes definitely didn’t want either of his Pokemon touching the wild Grimer, so he commanded his Scraggy to launch another sand attack. Alexander followed orders and sent another flurry of dust and dirt right at the neon green Pokemon, who continued to groan and growl in displeasure. This was actually getting quite scary, especially if the wild Grimer started throwing poison sludge. However, Reyes doubted it was strong enough to know any serious poison type moves.

This time around, the shiny Grimer decided it would try something else. It lifted what looked like a slimy, neon green arm and slapped it right down on top of Alexander in a pound attack. Alexander shrieked in disgust and scrambled away, pawing at the bits of ooze that clung to his skin. He seemed extremely grossed out, and he wasn’t exactly the most squeamish Pokemon out there. The wild Grimer raised its arm once more, threatening another pound attack.

“Hit it with another sand attack!” Alexander managed to get over his bout of uncontrollable shivering to kick even more garbage and dirt in the shiny Pokemon’s face. It was interesting to think that a Pokemon made of poison sludge would hate having a bit of dirt and dust thrown at it, but it seemed true in this case. This time around, the wild Grimer seemed to retreat a bit back into the trash can, and Reyes found this the perfect moment to attempt a capture. He grabbed a regular pokeball from his bag and tossed it at the pile of green goo, hoping it didn’t get swallowed up.

The ball swayed and jiggled, just as Reyes suspected. Alexander wasn’t paying any attention at all, he was busy being grossed out and wiping what he could of the goo off himself. Ransom was avoiding the Scraggy like the plague because he smelled horrible after that encounter. Reyes was on the fence about this Pokemon, and he wasn’t sure whether he was hoping for it to burst out or hoping for it to stay. But at last, the decision was made for him and the pokeball went still. He had caught a rare and elusive shiny Grimer.

“Okay, let’s keep going.” Reyes attached the pokeball to his belt. He wasn’t too sure what he would be doing with that Pokemon. If it were, lets say, a shiny Smeargle or a shiny Purrloin, Reyes would definitely train it up to be a purely show Pokemon. But it was a Grimer, and he wasn’t even sure if he could use a Grimer in battle. The small group continued down the street and as the smell of toxic gasses faded away into the background, the night once again became pleasant. Reyes was smiling to himself as he strolled, and Alexander and Ransom seemed to be fascinated by the town. It was the first time Ransom had actually been out of his Pokeball and anywhere near a built up area, where for Alexander it was maybe his third time.

Ransom was the one who spotted it first. He stopped just as they walked past a space between two buildings and stared into it, as if he saw something the rest of them did not. Alexander and Reyes stopped a few meters away, noticing the Skarmory’s behavior. They walked back and both took a peek in, but saw nothing at all but the dark of the alley. Even Alexander didn’t see anything, and he normally would have spotted anything abnormal. Not knowing what was in there, Reyes sent in Ransom first to check it out.

“Go on, find what’s in there.” Ransom nodded and trudged in, his tall bird legs easily stepping over bits of garbage and stray bags of trash. A minute of tense silence passed before there was a sudden cry. Something dashed past their feet, followed closely behind by an angry looking Skarmory with his wings spread wide. What came dashing out would have been confusing for most others unfamiliar with the Unova region, but since Reyes came from the place, he recognized the Pokemon and its antics immediately.

It was a wild Zorua. Those tricky fox Pokemon often took the forms of other Pokemon, and they laughed at almost everything and anything, being very mischievous. In this case, the wild Zorua had taken form of a rare and elusive Eevee. Heck, it looked so real, even Reyes would’ve fallen for it if his alternate personality hadn’t done the mental equivalent of hitting him upside the head and telling him be better catch that wild Zorua because it would be useful, never mind he had already caught something earlier.

“Okay Alexander, hi jump kick!”

Alexander went running at the disguised Zorua and jumped, pushing his leg in front of him in a sort of flying kick. This was a good a time as any to get the practice for the move in, especially since he wasn’t so great at it yet. The kick made contact and sent the little Pokemon flying harder than Reyes had anticipated.

The wild Zorua got back up, the little dark Pokemon’s illusion had been broken. Instead of an Eevee, now it stood as a similar sized Pokemon with red markings on a dark grey background. It laughed at them for a minute before bouncing off, disappearing for a short time. Reyes had actually thought it escaped them when Ransom suddenly shrieked in irritation. Turning swiftly, Reyes caught the little wild Zorua laughing maniacally from atop a garbage can after the successful faint attack on his Skarmory. Ransom growled and raised his wings. They glowed as if ready for a swift attack, but Reyes quickly stopped his armored bird Pokemon. A swift wasn’t as effective against a dark type as a fighting move would be, so he turned to Alexander once more. “Give it another hi jump kick!”

Alexander leapt from his place and managed to kick the wild Pokemon right off his perch on top of the garbage cans.

The wild Zorua got up and launched itself at Alexander, claws out and ready to fight. Alexander jumped up onto some garbage cans to dodge the attack, but the wild Pokemon followed him none the less. The Zorua pursued him to the very top of the pile before tackling him hard, sending the little lizard tumbling back down. Alexander landed with a hard thud on the concrete, the wild Zorua landing on top of him and nearly scratching the crap out of him all over. It was a hands on scuffle now, and Alexander struggled to get the upper hand by shoving the sly fox Pokemon off him.

Alexander didn’t even need instruction from Reyes to land that last hi jump kick. It didn’t land completely, as the Scraggy was practically pinned to the ground, but it made contact and pushed the wild Zorua right off him. The wild Zorua, obviously weakened by three straight kicks in the face, landed in a heap. Reyes grabbed another from his bag and tossed it, engulfing the wild Pokemon in light before it disappeared inside.

The ball did not shake as much as Reyes thought it would. It jiggled once or twice before the telltale click sounded off and it went still. Ransom picked the small pokeball up with his beak and walked over to Reyes, depositing it in his hand. Reyes held it for a minute, inspecting it, before running a scan with his pokedex. This one was a male with a decent move set, though there wasn’t too much special about this one. It was fine to him, and maybe the Zorua would become an impressive battler or show Pokemon. Reyes attached the pokeball to his belt.

“Let’s keep going.” Reyes was determined to finish his walk and at least relax a little. Satoshi was now on high lookout. After the simultaneous appearance of both a shiny Pokemon and a rare Zorua, he figured this place had a good probability of useful Pokemon. Alexander and Ransom followed close behind, both ready to protect their trainer for various reasons. For Alexander, it was more of his loyalty, while for Ransom, it was more of a chance to brutalize anything in his path.

Reyes observed that a good amount of the shops were closed this time of night, and the ones left open were the Pokemon Center, the Pokemart and a few small, obscure restaurants. His Skarmory soon began to strut ahead of him, thinking himself some sort of bodyguard. There were a few late night owls like himself who walked past and some stared at the Pokemon that looked like lots of metal shaped like a bird. It wasn’t before something darted past them, seemingly right under their feet. Reyes jumped in surprise before catching sight of what it was.

The Purrloin sat on the sidewalk across the street, watching them warily from where it was. It was probably a stray, as it didn’t seem to have a collar or any sort of tags. Purrloin were often kept as pets in urban areas, alongside other cat Pokemon. Reyes had a nostalgic moment right then and there. He remembered his old Pokemon, and in particular, his Liepard that he got when it was just a little Purrloin. After the incident, he simply gave the Liepard to an aspiring coordinator, but he had been updated later on that the coordinator found his Pokemon unruly and unwilling to listen, so he released it. Too bad, really, but at that point Reyes simply didn’t care.

“C’mon,” Reyes smiled weakly and ushered his Pokemon forward, continuing down the street.
